The Pioneer SX-650 has an output power of about 35 watts per channel at 8 ohms. This was in line with the standards of the time and made it suitable for use with various types of speakers. The design of the SX-650 is typical of the 1970s with a silver anodized aluminum front panel and wooden side panels. The illumination of the knobs and gauges gives it a distinctive look.
The receiver is equipped with an AM/FM tuner with analog display. It has a tuning indicator and offers options for manual tuning. The back of the receiver contains several connections, including inputs for turntables (phono), tape decks and other audio sources. There are also connections for speakers. The SX-650 features bass and treble controls that allow users to adjust the tone of the output sound. It includes filters such as a loudness filter that helps compensate for the natural response of human hearing at different volumes. There is also a high filter to reduce high frequencies. On the front panel are analog meters for displaying output power and signal levels. These meters add a visual element to the listening experience.
